Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is a herbaceous plant native of the East, spread to Europe and around the Mediterranean basin. It has an annual life cycle and produces its grayish-green berries in the period of August, about a month after flowering. The Lands of Piceno, the Anise is grown mainly in the municipality of Castignano, thanks to the peculiarities of soil and climate (Badlands). From the second half of 800, in Italy the use of anise in the home distillation was perfected to the point spread aniseed liqueurs (anisette, anisina, sambuca, anisette) in industrial production. The Anisetta Meletti owes its success to the use of green anise Castignano, where, in the late 800 and early 900, annual production reached 80 tons.
