The museum was founded in 1977 in Cupra Marittima by the need to expose to the public the substantial collection of shells Titian and Vincenzo Cossignani. He took his first steps with temporary seats and with the organization of exhibitions in various cities of Italy and with the establishment of an educational museum at the elementary schools of Cupra Marittima. Since 1988, the museum is its permanent location in Via Adriatica Nord, 240. The building, a prefabricated structure heavier than 3,000 square meters of floor space, in addition to the exhibition includes a conference room for 200 people, a lecture hall for 80 students , a screening room with 50 seats, a library, a laboratory for typing of shells and photography, a shop and wall systems to the art gallery and the piastrelloteca malacologica. The museum has a dual system of video surveillance. The open side of the message boards and showcases is 1800 linear meters; 460 are the light fixtures. The pieces on display are more than 900,000 while those held in study collections of the museum are more than 9 million.
