Cimitero Monumentale

In 1875, due to the state of neglect of the town cemetery and its non-conformity to new regulations, Architect Luca Galli proposed the transformation of the existing structure. The cemetery conceived by Galli is monumental: a longitudinal axis of symmetry divides the courtyard which is bordered by porticos on the two longer sides; on the shorter side (to the west) is the entrance featuring a classical pronaos, which protrudes form the doric style walls and is higher than ground level. The other facade which faces inward closes the rectangular perimeter. The chapel at the centre has the same pronaos as the entrance; the semi-columns act as pilaster strips. The chapel is topped by a beacon which serves as a pedestal for a cast iron statue, Immortality, which is 280 cm tall, made by the sculptor Nicola Cerpelli of Fermo in the workshops of the Istituto Tecnico Montani in Fermo at the same time as the cemetery was planned. The cemetery has undergone several expansions beginning in the 1920s, immediately after WWII, in the 1960s and in recent years.
