Montegallo consists of twenty-three villages scattered in the ridges of a vast hilly area dominated by Mount Vettore. The area, quite wide, offers a huge variety of environments. The town hall is in the little village of Balzo, which has had an important role since the 16th century. Its territory is the base for excursions to Mount Vettore and the Pilato lake, the only glacial lake in the Apennines. The local architecture is linked to the presence of the Benedictine monks , who settled in the area before the origin of the municipal courts . The name ” Montegallo ” is attributed to the presence of Narcisio Gallo (sent by Charle Magne), who founded the castle of the area on the “Mount ” during the 15th century. Worth visiting, in the village of Fonditore is the house where Blessed Mark was born, the Church of St. Maria in Lapide, with a crypt dated 9th century. In the village of Balzo you can visit San Bernardino, built in the 17th century which has a gothic portal and Palace Branconi, a fine sand stone building of the 17th century. In the little village Interprete the Church of Santa Maria delle Sibille or Pantano preserves frescoes of the Sibyls Phrygia, Delphic, Ellespontina, Agrippina painted by Martino Bonfini in the early 17th century.
