Chiesa di San Lorenzo

The church of San Lorenzo, consecrated to St. Lawrence the Deacon and Martyr, was built on the site of an earlier church of unknown origins. While the previous church had two aisles, the present one is narrower by at least two metres and consists of a single nave, but it preserves the original longitudinal plan with the apse directed toward northeast. The construction of the church of San Lorenzo began on the 17^th of September 1786 and ended on the 1^st of November 1797. The project and the direction of the works were assigned to Pietro Maggi, an architect from Ticino, Switzerland. Maggi was able to realize a veritable masterpiece, thanks to neat and essential structural elements as well as elegant decorations, for which he availed himself of the skills of Swiss craftsmen. The fluted columns, decorated with fine Corinthian capitals in white stucco, were designed by Domenico Fontana from Ticino. The church (currently closed) is considered the finest of the village even though its exterior facade was never finished.
